Microblading Course & Permanent Makeup Training

Learn microblading, ombre powder brows, and combo brow artistry. Hands-on training at our Coquitlam campus with real model practicum and NACC-recognized certification.

A microblading course (also called a permanent makeup or PMU course) is a professional training program that certifies you to create semi-permanent eyebrow enhancements using specialized pigments and techniques. At BC Medical Aesthetic in Coquitlam, BC, we offer two complementary PMU certifications — microblading and ombre powder shading — plus a combo track that lets you offer every brow service clients in Metro Vancouver demand. Training includes real model practicum, not just synthetic skin work.

Microblading vs. ombre powder brows — which course should you take?

The two techniques produce different looks and suit different clients. Most successful PMU artists eventually offer both.

  • **Microblading Technician course** — hand-tool technique that creates fine hair-like strokes mimicking natural brow hairs. Best for clients wanting hyper-realistic, feathered brows. Works especially well on normal to dry skin types. Session price in Metro Vancouver: $400-$700 typical.
  • **Ombre Powder Shading Brow Technician course** — machine-based technique creating a soft gradient from light front to darker tail, resembling filled-in brows with makeup. Works on all skin types including oily skin where microblading tends to blur. Session price: $450-$800.
  • **Combo brows** — the artist uses both techniques in a single session (microblading strokes in the front + powder shading in the body/tail). Premium pricing ($600-$1,200) and currently the most-requested brow service in Vancouver aesthetic clinics.

Students who want to offer the full range take both courses. Students who want to start fastest typically pick microblading first (simpler equipment, lower startup cost), then add ombre once client demand justifies the machine investment.

What you learn in the microblading course

Facial anatomy and brow mapping. The underlying bone structure, muscle groups that affect brow expression, and how to measure symmetry accurately using paper rulers, string mapping, and digital techniques. Bad PMU is usually a mapping failure, not a stroke failure — we spend significant time here.

Colour theory and pigment selection. The Fitzpatrick scale applied to pigment choice, undertone identification (warm vs cool vs neutral), how pigments shift as they heal (the greying, reddening, and bluing that ruin amateur work), and brand-specific pigment libraries. You will learn to pick the exact pigment for each client based on their skin + hair undertone.

Blade technique and stroke patterns. Hand position, pressure, depth control, angle of entry, stroke direction matching natural hair growth, and how to build dimension with varied stroke density. This is the part that requires the most practice — we include extensive synthetic-skin practice before live-model work.

Machine calibration (ombre track). Needle cartridge selection, voltage settings, saturation technique, blending from light to dark, and fade-out patterns at the tail.

Sanitation and bloodborne pathogen protocols. Single-use needle handling, sterile field setup, cross-contamination prevention, Health Authority compliance, and BC-specific sanitation standards. Insurance and regulatory compliance starts here.

Live model practicum. Every student performs full sessions on real models under direct supervision at our Coquitlam clinic. This is where technique becomes craft — consistent strokes, symmetrical result, professional client communication from intake to aftercare.

Consultation and aftercare. Realistic expectation setting, contraindication screening (pregnancy, certain medications, skin conditions), touch-up scheduling, and aftercare instructions that produce good healed results.

Is a microblading course worth it in BC?

The permanent makeup market in Metro Vancouver has grown aggressively since 2020. PMU artists with quality training can command premium pricing from day one because the margin per session is high and the demand exceeds supply, particularly for skilled artists who can do combo brows well.

Income realities in BC: - Entry-level microblading artist: $40,000-$60,000/year working a booth at a salon - Experienced independent PMU artist in Metro Vancouver: $80,000-$150,000+/year - Mobile/studio PMU artists with loyal clientele: often higher, with 2-3 bookings per day at $500-$800 each

Unlike most aesthetics services, PMU has strong recurring revenue — clients return every 12-24 months for touch-ups ($200-$400 typically) creating a stable repeat-income base. Build a book of 100-150 loyal clients and you have a sustainable business.

BC regulations for permanent makeup

Permanent makeup in BC is regulated under general tattooing/body modification frameworks, which require: - Health Authority inspection of your facility (Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health) for hygiene and needle-disposal compliance - Bloodborne Pathogen training (we include this in the course) - Appropriate waste disposal contracts for sharps - Professional liability insurance — our certification qualifies you for coverage through Beauty and Body Professionals Canada and similar providers

No provincial licence is required to operate, but local municipal business licensing applies if you open your own studio.

Why train at BC Medical Aesthetic

Real models, not just latex. Our microblading and ombre courses include live-model practicum — you will do actual PMU on real people under direct supervision before graduation.

Both techniques taught on-site. Many BC schools teach only microblading. We teach microblading, ombre, and combo brows so you can offer the full service menu immediately.

Industry-grade pigments and equipment. We train you on the same pigment brands and machines used in top Metro Vancouver PMU studios.

Small classes, direct instructor feedback. Limited enrollment means real one-on-one coaching during every stroke pattern. Our head instructor Manucher Nick personally supervises PMU sessions at the Coquitlam campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a permanent makeup artist earn in BC?
Permanent makeup artists in British Columbia can earn between $50,000 and $100,000 or more annually, depending on their skill level, client volume, and pricing strategy. A single microblading or ombre brow session typically ranges from $400 to $800 in the Greater Vancouver area, including Coquitlam. Since PMU requires a touch-up appointment and clients return every 1 to 3 years, practitioners build a recurring revenue stream. Many successful PMU artists work independently and set their own schedules.
What is the difference between microblading and ombre powder brows?
Microblading uses a manual hand tool to create fine, hair-like strokes that mimic individual brow hairs — ideal for a natural, feathered look. Ombre powder shading uses a PMU machine to create a soft, gradient effect from light at the front of the brow to darker at the tail, resembling brows filled in with makeup. Both techniques are taught at BC Medical Aesthetic in Coquitlam. Many artists offer a combination of both for the most versatile and natural-looking result.
How long does permanent makeup training take?
Our microblading technician course and ombre powder shading course are each focused programs designed to build competency in their respective techniques. Training includes theory, practice on synthetic skins, and supervised work on live models at our Coquitlam clinic. The total time investment depends on whether you take one course or both. Many students complete both courses to offer the full range of brow services that clients in British Columbia expect.
Is permanent makeup safe, and what about allergic reactions to pigments?
Permanent makeup is safe when performed by a trained professional using high-quality, hypoallergenic pigments and sterile equipment. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, which is why our training at BC Medical Aesthetic covers patch testing protocols, pigment ingredient screening, and contraindication assessment. You will also learn proper sanitation, single-use needle protocols, and cross-contamination prevention to meet health and safety standards in British Columbia.
